On one of my trips to London, and before I moved to Brazil, I found some amazing plastic shoes. Genius! I was living in Denmark where it rains on a regular basis (and I am not a fan of rain boots!), so this seemed like a fantastic solution to the summertime downpours … a pair of plastic ballerinas! And so my collection of plastic shoes started.
When I was a child, I owned about five different pairs of “jelly shoes,” as we called them then. The design was the same; the only difference was the color. Comfort was not a concern at that age — they were some of the most uncomfortable shoes I have ever owned and not that easy to walk in. But they were the height of cheap fashion in the early 80s and everyone have them!
Enter Melissa Plastic Shoes
Enter Melissa, a Brazilian brand of plastic shoes — little did I know that I would be living there only a year after buying my first pair. Many of the products you buy in Brazil are not high quality, but there is always a very vibrant energy to the design. And this brand is one of my favorites.
These shoes happen to be comfortable, too. There is a layer of padding in the bottom of most styles that make a long walk bearable. You can get them in ballerinas, high heels, sandals, you name it! And what I love is how affordable they are.
On a side note … most products that you buy in Brazil and/or that are produced by a Brazilian company are made locally. With high import taxes, Brazil is doing a good job of keeping a lot of international brands off the radar. This is an attractive quality to me when choosing to buy, supporting the local country/community.
